Metal Web Joists

(Space Joist | Floor Joist | EcoJoist | Posi-Joist | Easi-Joist)

Our metal web joists are high quality, affordable & eco-friendly. At Minera Roof Trusses we are always evolving to satisfy the requirements of an ever changing market whilst operating within a constantly developing industry. For over 40 years, we have been at the forefront of our market, both in terms of supplying professional products and providing our customers with the highest quality of service.

Alongside our Roof and Attic Trusses we supply our premier joist product: the Metal Web Joist (also known as Space Joist | Floor Joist | EcoJoist | Posi-Joist | Easi-Joist). These are ideal for floors or flat and mono-pitched roofs which can be used in domestic, industrial and commercial installations.

We work in partnership with ITW Construction Products, a leading manufacturer and specialist of builder’s metalwork and offsite fabrication solutions. Minera Roof Trusses share their drive and passion in offering differentiation through service and innovation where providing a significantly improved alternative to traditional joists is key to what we do.

ITW Construction

Metal Web Joists combine the lightweight attribute of timber and strength of steel to form an open web structure. Delivered manufactured to site, this allows for ease of installation and increased strength in comparison to traditional methods. They have advanced on their ability to offer a comprehensive range of depths and cater for greater flexibility with spans.

With traditional floor joists, sizes of 225 x 50 or 225 x 75mm are used. With an Engineered Floor Joist – Metal Web Joists (Space Joist | Floor Joist | EcoJoist | Posi-Joist | Easi-Joist), the only timber that is used is 97 x 47mm or 72 x 47mm. The floor depth can still be 219mm deep, but the key difference is that the middle of the web is not made from timber, but actually consists of a V shape Metal Web. Thus reducing the amount of timber used in your project whilst also having the advantage of assisting trades when installing cabling and piping.

Metal Web Joists have quickly become established within the industry as a preferred option as customers’ requirements have become increasingly ambitious and complex with their self-build projects. We have supplied joists for extensions such as orangeries and sun lounges all the way up to “Grand Designs,” you can see our project in the Malvern Hills. They have been designed with the trades in mind, aiming to make builders, electricians and plumbers’ jobs that bit easier!

The Benefits

Floor joists designed, manufactured and delivered to site within 5 working days but the benefits don’t stop there! Read on to discover why you should be choosing Minera Roof Trusses floor joists for your project.

As one of the first roof truss fabricators to establish an engineering design department at the truss plant, tight quality control methods were introduced over 15 years ago and this enabled Minera Roof Trusses to undertake complex roof projects working with architects and engineers on various schemes.

This has now been extended to our engineered floor joist department and with the investment of high tech manufacturing equipment, which enables the delivery of your engineered floor joists to site in 5 WORKING DAYS in the UK.

Please find below a brief summary of why you should choose our engineered floor joist system with the open metal web over traditional joists and I Joists.

Please note: Our full calculations can be used for LA control as they include vibration and deflection checks compliant with Euro Code. This is not possible with traditional joists.

Installation Guides

Installation within a Joist system

Minera’s metal web joists – the solution to installing MVHR into your building without returning to the drawing board. Our metal web joists (also referred to as Space Joist | Floor Joist | EcoJoist | Posi-Joist | Easi-Joist) are specially designed with a central metal web structure allowing for ease of access for trades whilst not compromising on strength. This is successfully used in all forms of construction, whether domestic, commercial or retail in the floor or in the roof as the benefits of overall build time surpasses all other systems when taking into account the follow-on trades.

Floor Joist Span Tables

Tables for domestic floor loading (based on TR26 timber). Subject to dimension changes for staircase openings.

We are frequently asked by customers, “What is the maximum span that can be achieved with the minimum depth?” We have included this diagram for guideline purposes based on a domestic floor loading. Please note that all designs should be confirmed by a member of our team as there are some circumstances for example, office floor loadings or the installation of a staircase which can affect these guideline spans.

There are many benefits of metal web joists – one is that they have large open spaces for services to feed through. We’re often asked what size the pipes need to be and have given a guide for your reference below. This varies depending on whether your pipes are circular, rectangular or square in shape. It’s important to note that metal web joists must not be cut, drilled or notched as this may impact negatively on their structural durability.

Please note: All metal work required for basic installation is quoted for and supplied with your order. This includes metal connectors, strong back bracing and any additional timbers.

In cases where 2 ply joists are required due to floor loadings, these are screwed together in house and arrive on site as one unit.

Our joists are always labelled with ‘TOP’ to show which way up the joists should be installed. Please see our illustration below for more guidance or refer to the Space Joist installation guide.

Mechanical Ventilation
& Heat Recovery (MVHR)

Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) can be used for properties built or refurbished to current Building Regulations Part F and L standards where air permeability can be down to 3 to 4 m3/h at 50pa pressure difference.

Every one of us exhales 10 to 75 litres of CO2 per hour and up to 175 grams of water per hour. A family of four produces 10-15 litres of water vapour a day through breathing, washing, showering and cooking.

The MVHR system extracts warm moist air via ducts to wet rooms and passes this air through a heat recovery cell before it is discharged outside. At the same time fresh air from outside is drawn through the cell where it is warmed and distributed to the living rooms and bedrooms.

How does it work?

The system comprises a Heat Recovery Unit and a network of ducting which is connected to each room. It extracts warm moist air via ducts to the wet rooms and passes this air through a heat recovery cell before it is discharged outside. At the same time fresh air from outside is drawn through the cell where it is warmed and distributed to the living rooms and bedrooms.

The ducting runs within the ceiling or floor space of the rooms, hidden from view, however this can present challenges from an installation point of view in running the ducting within the joisting system.
